Comments: Ms. Chapo, I realize you know more about guns than I ever will. I'm sure you can see we have a problem in this country with the 13 school shootings we have had this year alone. I'm sure guns are not the whole issue. I think the meds these kids take at such a young age contributes. In addition, I'msure there are many other reasons. But these type of weapons such as the assault rifle used by the young lady in Nashville yesterday seem dangerous to the novice like me. Would you care to elaborate and tell me what good does this weapon do for the everyday American? I fail to see the need but if I'm willing to learn. Please explain.

Comments: To local/national tjh ace reporter: I had a really hard time reading through your post. How in the world would JB, a seasoned and well-respected veteran who honorably served this country with one of those fully automatic war weapons ever agree with your assessment, without corrections.
You are either misinformed or you already drank the Kool aid and are using a tragic event to conflate a full-auto war weapon with a modern-day semi-automatic firearm. Contrary to your assessment, the semi-automatic firearms available to us law-abiding private citizens fire a single shot per trigger pull. How would that work as a war weapon? It wouldn’t.
But then again, this is a propaganda war. There is no such thing as an assault weapon, including those scary “AR” types. Nothing is new. Deranged individuals assault the innocent. It’s not the tool.
As for us responsible gun owners, there is nothing for us “to do better” other than to exercise our Constitutional rights and duties to preserve our liberty and to protect ourselves, our children, and our Country.

Comments: Tammy has it right! I might add when did we stop caring about one another? In this age of technology, parents put down your darn phone and TALK to your kids. Do you know what your kid is doing online when he/she is spending hours on the web? How about having a meal together once in awhile? Take the darn devices away at bedtime. Get involved with the school. Ask questions...if something doesn't seem right - speak up until someone listens.
regarding JW...I can't believe this community elected him to the school board. Talk about a conflict of interest. He beat out an incumbent that truly had the best interest of children. We reap what we sow..hence we have only one SRO
Good job TJH and JB

Comments: Saw where VMI is promoting historic sites and the state park but not the great restaurant and shopping scene in Madison. Also saw where the lady that was caught funneling money to VMI years back had her fat mug on camera smiling away like she isn’t a thief and liar. This town is nuts.

Comments: I had a very hard time with this topic and post.
I've been asked to address the ongoing issue related to gun violence/murder of our children in our schools across the nation as it relates to a local issue. The national issue is of course that the vast majority of these tragedies are possible because of automatic weapons. Obviously any gun can kill but its much easier to kill with lots of bullets and rapid fire ability than to reload a revolver or throw rocks or stab 9 people. Still, AR type "war" weapons are legal for private citizens.
ARs aside- Our local issue is MCS School Resource Officers--here's what we know: We had failed background checks, the buddy system and politics which resulted in accusations of all sorts of misconduct with both male and female kids for which a SRO was terminated and his case is still making its way through the system.
We know political favors and of course the simple process of hiring buddies and blocking qualified candidates from filling vacancies is a concern to many. MCS has left a SRO position open despite having well qualified candidates apply and interview. Rumors abound- but there are those who accuse the political establishment of blocking his hiring because they fear he might run for sheriff.
Is there a safety issue that we dont have more SROs at MCS- well maybe- or maybe there's a safety issue that an SRO has been accused of misconduct and fired. For this and lots of other reasons, maybe police dont belong in schools in the first place. Maybe there's a safety issue with automatic weapons in our community or unstable kids or violent people- I dont know. Maybe politics has over ridden our children's safety. Maybe small town politics has destroyed many things in Jefferson County. Lots of opinions about lots of issues but the truth is no one wants dead children unless it affects their guns then they are willing to "spread the risk".
I really dont know what to say except an SRO has been fired for misconduct; an ex-SRO & still chief is on the school board, we have an experienced SRO on staff; we supposedly eliminated one SRO position to raise salaries on the two remaining but an SRO position remains vacant.
I wish I had some wisdom- all I can say is Uvalde showed us that an entire police force will sit cowardly by as kids are slaughtered and yet, a single, brave kid in Greenwood shot a perpetrator and may have saved many other lives. So its not the position, its the person who makes a difference. MCS has taught us this: and SRO can do more harm than good, SROs are political footballs, hiring and paying big salaries to buddies is super duper important- more important than the kids to some people. Even the police chief-ex SRO and now school board member hasn't been able to stop the politics surrounding school safety- not that he should have to all on his own because he shouldn't.
Bottom line- the nation needs to do better- but then again so does MCS and every gun owner. I'll try to find data on SROs and impact on school safety. tjh
