EDITORIAL/OPINION :When you think of the holidays,
             what comes to mind?

If, what you have in mind, is the mess we have on our riverfront---then you need to skip the rest of the story.

Our idea of celebrating a Victorian Christmas in an old river town such as Old Madison, is not trashing the river front with a display of advertisement signs and a gaudy display of cheap lights.
The Mayor and the Chamber of Commerce along with his sycophants have, for a price, allowed local businesses to install signs advertising their business during the Christmas season on our beautiful river front.

They have not come together with their advertising signs and lights for the spirit of Christmas, but only for the betterment of themselves. The local media will praise those who contribute money for the cheap lights and tell us we should be thankful while they litter our river front with their cheap trash and signs.

Celebrating Christmas has been controversial since its inception. Numerous festivities have found their roots in celebrating this practices and we do not believe it is the spirit of Christmas to allow Fat-Al, the Chamber or anyone to commercialize this event with their advertisement signs under the disguises of pretending to do good while trashing our river front.

The advertisement signs present a drastic contrast with the simplicity of the Nativity and the spirit of the season. Have we lost the ability to enjoy the nostalgia and homeliness of a traditional Christmas here at home?

In the spirit of Christmas, we suggest that visitors to our city and the riverfront Do Not patronize any of the business that display a sign on our river front during this holiday season.

We almost forgot the most important thing. They block off access to Vaughn Drive and you have to enter through a roadblock where they solicit money to see their signs and lights. Besides disrupting the flow of traffic and being a nuisance to local folks who use Vaughn Drive; "in the spirit of Christmas" not one dime of their solicited monies goes to help a poor child or a needy family.

Fat-Al and the Chamber of Commerce should hold their heads in shame for what they are being a part of.
Yo, fat man!     Do the right thing...
