I have no further updates about our area being declared a federal disaster area. I have been in touch with a County Commissioner and EMA. I can confirm the application process hasn’t even started and the plan is to “wait to get in”. I’ve no idea why we and Indiana are waiting and other area states have already declared. I know many citizens are in need of assistance especially Hanover Beach and few private homes along Vaughn Drive and in the county. I’m very sorry.

If you have flood insurance it will not pay out without a federal disaster declaration (FEMA)- if by chance we do eventually get that declaration you will need photos of the damage. Be sure to capture damage to water heaters, appliances, air conditioning etc. make sure you have photos of drywall damage, flooring damage , electric and even gas line issues. Show the water line, show the mud, show the debris that must be cleared. NFIP does not pay costs associated with damage to out buildings nor below grade- meaning basements or cellars. They don’t pay to restore your landscape or yard- just the building and contents damaged in the flood.

A word of caution- if an official comes to you with a form asking you to document damage they may only be applying for the state fund which only helps local government- not you. You must ask local officials if they are seeking a federal declaration- if you get the run around or are told they must see how much damage there is to qualify- REMEMBER KENTUCKY ALREADY HAS THEIRS- so their officials did the work and got approval as the water was rising. Ours have NOT done that work. The truth is some things are just obvious- I would think the damage to the pool alone would be adequate for the city to pressure the governor- but who knows.

The other reason for taking photos and saving receipts is that there are options - not as good, not as much and not as quick but still options. I will go over those in a few days if we don’t get info from the city or county. Tjh

The rivers current official height is 458.53. It will crest today at 8pm at 458.6

The mystery as to why some people say Wednesday may be they watch news out of Louisville- which of course uses the McAlpine levels not Clifty Creek or Markland in Vevay. Again, it doesn’t matter much in this case because the river will stay roughly flat tomorrow only dropping an inch or two until Wednesday evening when it will drop about a foot overnight . Thursday will see a major drop of at least 4 feet before 8pm. I am told Legacy Foundation is reaching out attempting to learn how it might be able to help with flood recovery.

Braun has still not declared a disaster area in Indiana and may not . Trump announced he prefers to close FEMA and will definitely reduce it. So who knows what will occur . Regardless Kentucky has their ducks in a row and documentation has already begun to help citizens file their flood insurance claims and get emergency dollars for clean up. The National Flood Insirance Program Is not FEMA - so it will pay out based on policies that are activated only after a FEMA declaration and regardless of Trump -Braun wackiness.

While Indiana is one of a few states to have a disaster relief fund (funded by firework sales tax of all things) there is no local or county disaster relief dollars for citizens. The county rainy day fund has been extremely well managed - the city fund has been severely depleted over the last few years. Tjh

Off the Flood topic: To all you people that hunt mushrooms its best to always get the prproperty owners pepermission prior to going on properties that dont belong to you.
Its NEVER a good idea to argue with the property owner. The owner has the the right to ask you to leave and not come back. The owner has the right to call the Police and have you Trespassed from their property.
I understand the owner of the woods North of Supershine has not given permission to Anybody to come onto his property for any reason and he will Traspass you with the police if you are caught in his woods. I also understand he ha trail Cameras up to catch Violators.

The man can’t admit he is wrong. My guess is he had it bad for any woman that stands up to him. Drinks too much and not that smart. Besides all that he is vindictive and will hurt himself just to stand his ground because he can’t control his pride.

So explain the difference in disaster areas. What does Kentucky have that we won’t and why won’t our house insurance or flood insurance pay the damages?

Sorry for the delays today but the news is mostly good. The projected crest is still TUESDAY - we have about a foot left to go. We will crest at 458 and change which is a foot higher than now and a foot higher than 2018. We will fall about 2 foot less than 1997. Maybe this is the 30 year flood - maybe not. I’d like to think so. I just don’t know.

Yes the Carrollton executives have apologized. It was very generous and honest of them to do so. Still the issue is far more complex than Carroll County. We didn’t get to a tidal wave arriving in Madison without lots of misinformation. Carroll County never said any such thing. We did that to ourselves. There is no such as an alternative fact. One reason I’m comfortable working with JB on the flood is that he has no tolerance for false information during a disaster. I think he’s done a good job keeping the goofy stuff off that’s over ran social media.

The flood isn’t over- the hard part is about to begin. Clean up is heartbreaking and exhausting . If you have time to volunteer to help folks clean up and then move in - do so. The problem with a slow crest and fall is that the water slows down and mud settles out - so buildings and homes will be overwhelmed with slippery muck that makes clean up incredibly difficult and dangerous. Find the time to volunteer over the weekend if you can. There are plenary of resources for flood victims. Reach out and if you can’t find what you need - send a note. JB will get you in touch with all those who have sent notifications of their resources. Tomorrow is a better day. Tjh

No I don’t know why Courtney says the water crests on Wednesday- because it doesn’t -at least according to NOAA experts. It will crest tomorrow at Clifty Creek approximately 8pm at 458.2. But it doesn’t make much difference folks because the water will drop by an entire inch maybe by Wednesday morning and slowly drop inch by inch all day until Thursday when it starts to pick up speed. So if Bob wants to say Wednesday that’s okay. Maybe he reads the Louisville gauge and is using that. Maybe he’s worried people will try to rush back in their homes - I don’t know- there are a few times inches matter but not in this situation. But I understand misinformation can be dangerous. Point - Dix Dam and the tidal wave scare

Again- folks in low lying areas of Prestonville and Worthville in Carroll County were at risk for record flooding - the folks in Carrollton not as bad. But the scare at Dix dam wasn’t an uncontrolled release as much as it was a few staff struggling to get things done when and how they needed to. So a few complained and the next thing you know misinformation is flying . One person may have said the gates were a problem to close. The next said the problem is the gates won’t close and the next said the water release is out of control and the next said we don’t know what to do because we can’t get information about when they will get things under control and then…

We have videos and commentary that the uncontrolled water is coming for Madison. So yes we all understand the problems with misinformation. But Bobs isn’t a tidal wave or wall of water - it’s an inch or two over a day or two and honestly- he’s doing a fair job of trying to deal with all the issues that arise in the midst of rain, flash floods, tornados , blocked drains, mudslides, closed roads and a river out of control. It’s not fair to compare Bobs comments to anything out of Kentucky.

But I will say our elected officials up and down the Ohio need to get that federal disaster declaration —-Kentucky already has theirs - it opens so many resources to our citizens and governments. Time to start planning clean up ! Tjh

Take a deep breath everybody. Yes the Kentucky River is flooding.  Yes it’s a bad flood- worse than Madison. Yes the gates were opened and yes low lying areas are going to get hit hard but from Dix Dam to the Ohio is a very long way and the water will spread out before it ever gets to the Ohio to make its way to us.   So put on your rubber boots, pet the dogs and watch some TV but don’t let rumors scare you.

Admin reply: Update : There is no tidal wave coming. I am told by Kentucky officials they believe the Kentucky river can handle the small rise in water level downstream of the Kentucky river near Carrollton should only have minor impacts on current river levels as we obtain more information we will pass that along

There appears to be conflicting information regarding the Dix Dam water release. The information below was recently released by Franklin County Kentucky Officials.

(WKYT) - UPDATE: 6:37 P.M.- Officials from Kentucky Utilities tell WKYT that the opening at Dix Dam was a controlled spill. These controlled spills have occurred since Friday night and gates are being closed now and throughout Sunday evening.

UPDATE, 6:04 P.M.- Franklin County Magistrate Sherry Sebastian says that she is told the information posted by Carrollton officials does not include Frankfort.
According to Sebastian, Franklin County officials have told her that outflow measurements from Dix Dam have been factored into the numbers released by weather services.
Franklin County Emergency Management Director Ray Kinney says the state weather service has not detected a severe rise in water levels, but could not speak to the opening of floodgates at Dix Dam.

Franklin County Judge Executive Michael Mueller also posted a clarification on his Facebook page, saying that the opening of the floodgates was intentional and based on calculations that remain accurate.
