Comments: Everybody just standing around waiting on the mayor to broadcast the rivers gonna crest any minute . What a joke even the Courier got it right that it was yesterday. They probably read the forum too JB. Might not have been dangerous but it sure is funny the man can’t admit his mistakes. So let’s take bets- is he going to ignore it and not say anything or just do another broadcast about how today it crested but warn people to still stay out of the water?

Comments: Just a quick off the subject for your information:
I just spoke to someone at the school who said that Jacob McVey face to face lied to her police officer about an attack at the High school. He said he wasn't aware of the incident even though several meetings took place that he attended. The teacher recorded the meetings.

Comments: There still isn’t a federal flood declaration. That means flood victims are facing additional challenges. If they have flood insurance they can still get a pay out but without the fema declaration those that dont have insurance aren’t eligible for grants and low interest loans. Loans are not income based nor are they just for citizens- businesses are eligible too. This is a tad different from several years back but still significant. So file your NFIP POLICY CLAIM NOW- but your home owners will not cover flood regardless. I apologize for any confusion. You will still need photos and receipts for your NFIP plan.
You still can’t get any federal grants if we are not a federal disaster area. So you will need to look to local resources for assistance. Groups like Kindness Jefferson County already have forms on their Facebook page so they can connect you. I cannot find anything from the Salvation Army. The Redcross has a website you can visit and will send volunteers to your home to help. Of the three Kindness will be the quickest to respond I imagine simply because they have a broad, reliable volunteer base.
Things you need for clean up- snow shovel to push muck and mud from the home, bleach to kill bacteria in river water, waders or protection from water and mud, good gloves, squeegee to remove water, water hose and sprayer, crowbars and hammers to remove damaged drywall and pull carpet or flooring, dumpster or trash disposal, volunteers, fans to help dry , heater to provide a warm spot for workers. Have alcohol gel and first aid kit ready and consider a tetanus shot from the local health department who- in 1997 had a mobile clinic to vaccinate volunteers and workers.
The water will drop more than 4 feet tomorrow - Thursday. Be careful. Again file your NFIP insurance- but your home owners won’t cover- you are not eligible for federal grants without a fema declaration. Any form brought to you by the city or county is NOT an application for federal grants. It is a form to certify damage in the area so the city and county can get funds for infrastructure and government clean up- it is not for home owner assistance. Tjh

Comments: The Walmart should be closed until the raw sewage issue is resolved. If they aren't open for business, they can't pollute the environment with raw sewage. Any other business would be shut down.

Comments: Why no disaster declaration? People need it so they can get help. At this rate we won’t see a dime. What gives? Does Courtney not think anyone else matters besides his ego?

Comments: Large sewer spill @ Walmart hundreds of thousands of Gallons of sewer that has reached Crooked Creek stay out of the water and away from the creek. This is a Health Hazzard. Walmart cant fix the line as the line was put on someone elses property with No Easement. Its a Private matter. IDEM will not be down to check into the matter until next week. Its out of the local stores hands. Its a Walmart Corp. matter with the landowner. The landowner will not allow Walmart contractors Aqualis on his property until an easement can be established and Walmart agrees to pay for the damages already created. The landowner has dug in and refuses Walmart any access. The situation has gone on several weeks. Please join the Boycott of Walmart here and Nationwide. Its est.50,000 gallons of raw sewer per day is reaching Crooked Creek. The last spill on the line was Sept. of 2021.and at that time the City covered for Walmart. The City has decided its a Private matter between the landowner and Walmart. The landowner has severe damage to his property and pond area. Seems Walmart put their private line on this guys property without doing a Title search, Permission ,Notice or Easement and they got Caught. I understand the landowner and Walmart refuse to Communicate. This is a health hazzard yet the store is allowed to stay open???

Comments: I have no further updates about our area being declared a federal disaster area. I have been in touch with a County Commissioner and EMA. I can confirm the application process hasn’t even started and the plan is to “wait to get in”. I’ve no idea why we and Indiana are waiting and other area states have already declared. I know many citizens are in need of assistance especially Hanover Beach and few private homes along Vaughn Drive and in the county. I’m very sorry.
If you have flood insurance it will not pay out without a federal disaster declaration (FEMA)- if by chance we do eventually get that declaration you will need photos of the damage. Be sure to capture damage to water heaters, appliances, air conditioning etc. make sure you have photos of drywall damage, flooring damage , electric and even gas line issues. Show the water line, show the mud, show the debris that must be cleared. NFIP does not pay costs associated with damage to out buildings nor below grade- meaning basements or cellars. They don’t pay to restore your landscape or yard- just the building and contents damaged in the flood.
A word of caution- if an official comes to you with a form asking you to document damage they may only be applying for the state fund which only helps local government- not you. You must ask local officials if they are seeking a federal declaration- if you get the run around or are told they must see how much damage there is to qualify- REMEMBER KENTUCKY ALREADY HAS THEIRS- so their officials did the work and got approval as the water was rising. Ours have NOT done that work. The truth is some things are just obvious- I would think the damage to the pool alone would be adequate for the city to pressure the governor- but who knows.
The other reason for taking photos and saving receipts is that there are options - not as good, not as much and not as quick but still options. I will go over those in a few days if we don’t get info from the city or county. Tjh

Comments: The rivers current official height is 458.53. It will crest today at 8pm at 458.6
The mystery as to why some people say Wednesday may be they watch news out of Louisville- which of course uses the McAlpine levels not Clifty Creek or Markland in Vevay. Again, it doesn’t matter much in this case because the river will stay roughly flat tomorrow only dropping an inch or two until Wednesday evening when it will drop about a foot overnight . Thursday will see a major drop of at least 4 feet before 8pm. I am told Legacy Foundation is reaching out attempting to learn how it might be able to help with flood recovery.
Braun has still not declared a disaster area in Indiana and may not . Trump announced he prefers to close FEMA and will definitely reduce it. So who knows what will occur . Regardless Kentucky has their ducks in a row and documentation has already begun to help citizens file their flood insurance claims and get emergency dollars for clean up. The National Flood Insirance Program Is not FEMA - so it will pay out based on policies that are activated only after a FEMA declaration and regardless of Trump -Braun wackiness.
While Indiana is one of a few states to have a disaster relief fund (funded by firework sales tax of all things) there is no local or county disaster relief dollars for citizens. The county rainy day fund has been extremely well managed - the city fund has been severely depleted over the last few years. Tjh

Comments: Off the Flood topic: To all you people that hunt mushrooms its best to always get the prproperty owners pepermission prior to going on properties that dont belong to you. Its NEVER a good idea to argue with the property owner. The owner has the the right to ask you to leave and not come back. The owner has the right to call the Police and have you Trespassed from their property. I understand the owner of the woods North of Supershine has not given permission to Anybody to come onto his property for any reason and he will Traspass you with the police if you are caught in his woods. I also understand he ha trail Cameras up to catch Violators.
