I’ve forward Jeff the original connector trail grant application. The current proposal is significantly different. Oddly missing is an endorsement from the Town of Hanover Town Board which appears to be replaced by a letter from the then town clerk Keith Mefford for some odd reason. It’s not a difficult read - just boring and confirms previous information about IKE having supported but then reconsidered and finally having withdrawn permission.

I’d like to provide a little additional information regarding our experience with scholarships… local and otherwise.

First. Need based scholarships.

Scholarships, local or otherwise, tend to decrease the federal aid a student will receive. So in all honesty many times they may be of little net value to a student with a high financial need. Obviously all situations are different.

Second. Scholarships are set up. This is something the donors may want to address so their generosity can really help students.

Many scholarships within the community foundation are tuition only and do not assist with books, fees, computer, or room and board.
Our child received an offer for full tuition from a university (prior to any community awards). Our child received very generous scholarships from the community foundation…. Tuition only.

When the university found out, they wanted my child to accept them and give the money to the university. All this would do is decrease the amount of tuition gift the university committed to awarding.

Neither the university scholarship or the scholarships from the Jefferson Co Foundation would help with room and board ($20,000 plus a year). My child had earned those scholarships by hard work… grades, community service, leadership, etc.

We contacted the Community foundation to see if it could be applied to Room and Board or deferred to graduate school. Both options were denied.

My child decided to turn down the local scholarship so another student could benefit from it rather than letting the university reduce the financial commitment.

Food for thought.

Well thank goodness you aren’t in charge. Who deserves what and when is not your decision and some kids are brighter than their grades imply. B students make great college grads as do many C students at smaller less competitive colleges. Your D and F students need some extra guidance. So if you are looking for factory workers and desperate people that will work for nothing then stick to the bottom levels who don’t even bother to graduate school. But I do agree an “education” in Madison is pretty marginal. Even our best straight A students struggle against students who graduated from better programs

Scholarships to middle class students with a 3.0 GPA ?!? I think I see the problem. The 3.0 GPA from any of our local high schools does not need nor deserve a college scholarship. They need to learn a trade or career that requires no college education. They would likely be quite successful and the opportunity costs of earning experience and income during those four years will vastly outpace the college coursework, potential debt, and lack of experience they would suffer at university. To be bluntly honest, a 3.0 GPA Madison graduate is just not a very bright kid and scholarships should to go to bright kids, regardless of their financial status. Sapienta est potentia.

thanks for the info recent post have provided. Large projects and budgets provide money that can be scammed in many ways. How much will be diverted to other uses and miss-uses ?. The sneaky little mayor is well versed in such things. How much will end up in Hanover college bonuses? A trail to nowhere. Will be a golf cart road within 5 years
