The thing about the city having to shuffle money is nothing new. Combined with last years garbage gate and Courtney always borrowing tax collections ahead of normal payout dates for a couple of years, tax rate hikes and lots of issues when the state audits the city books has set off alarms with lots of people behind the scenes. The parks department’s almost 600 thousand screw-up is not because of seasonal workers. Those are the lowest and short scheduled employees with no benefits and you can’t overspend nearly 30 grand on parties and fun times and not know it. Easy to see the person who handles all those city fun days isn’t looking at numbers.

BUT, the real bulk of the red ink ending up around half a million is because of the pool, not the golf course, not summer kids mowing grass and not because of anything else besides Bob overspent on the pool, Bob didn’t watch cash flow and Bob didn’t budget enough to service the debt on all his “improvements”. I’m not saying it’s all the pool, but cramming all these new parks improvements in one year certainly caused a cash crunch and instead of openly confronting the issues Bob’s trying to hide it by borrowing from utilities so the state doesn’t see the shortfall.

Councilman Patrick Thevenow was dead right when he was the lone man to stand against the absurd decision to “borrow from the water department and pay it back it 6 months” Where do they think the moneys going to come from ? Bob says evaluate user fees which means raise golf course and pool rates. Who’s going to go swimming or golfing in January or February and even if you do get some golfers in the cool, rainy months, the pool doesn’t open until Memorial Day so we are sitting out here with no “user fees” coming in until the first of June. No way we are going to generate an EXTRA half a million in 6 months. EXTRA is the important word.

The golf course will need to raise its rates and then all the annual fees collected for yearly passes and golf cart rentals will have to go back to the water department. But that doesn’t leave much for the course to cover operating costs for grounds, maintenance or staff. This nincompoop scheme is just an effort for Bob to hide his lack of budgeting skill and oversight. Trying to blame the park board for Bobs overspending is ridiculous. I doubt this came as a surprise to anyone. Bob’s actions reminds me of Huntingtons last minute council meetings to purchase swamp land on New Years Eve one year. Our shovel ready industrial park is nothing but a muddy mess that’s leased out to farmers. Courtney’s overspending and poor cash flow management shouldn’t have been hidden in last minute meetings just before the New Years. It’s a shame everyone but Thevenow went along with this farce. I expect to see the debt “forgiven” and some sort of scam to try to hide the budgeting and cash flow error from the state again.

What is your definition of a popular mayor? He has his fans but he has done nothing but divided this town.
He is a bully and uses his pals to harass citizens.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, but you would think a restaurant owner who depends on townspeople to keep his business afloat would not be harassing a popular mayor.

Downtown resident-
Shelter is dogging calls and so is animal control. Both were supposed to be available yesterday and today and right as we are getting ready for a big storm and polar cold they are dodging their duties. This ain’t right .

Mayor’s neighbor-
Welp it’s no big secret the mayor threw a tantrum when the frontier kitchen guy parked his smoker and truck by Bobs house. The two of them been going at it for a while and the mayor’s thrown fit after fit about the guy having his stuff in front of his restaurant where people can see him BBQ in action. So the guy moved it to Bobs house. Seems the police had to come and calm Bob down and the old man that owns the Lumber Mill got caught in the cross fire. Although he’s legally parked and so was the bbq truck the mayor couldn’t stand it. Threatened local cops job . They both had to move. It was quite the scene.

I was staring at Google Maps tonight trying to think of where I wanted to get dinner. There's always the same old places, but I thought I'd see something on the map that I might not usually think of...sure didn't. Considered one place downtown and checked the menu--I've been there, but it sure reminded me that everything is overpriced and not that special. Every appetizer north of $10, except chips and salsa, which are $9 (do they know most every Mexican restaurant gives those away for free?). Tourists and local yuppies don't know what a dollar is for in Madison. Considered another restaurant, and yes they have good food, but the prices are also something to take into account...plus it's no longer a neighborhood bar, it's been gentrified and is now a magnet for hipster doofuses that dress in business smart attire, throw money around, inflating the cost of a takeout order for the poor man that lives on the corner. I'm a local, born here and spent most of my life here. I didn't fall off the tourist bus and decide I wanted to glom on to someone else's lifestyle, but it's getting to be where there is no quality of life in Madison, just a day to day struggle to survive and tolerate the BS. Happy New Year.

Pizza uncommon is closing.  Apparently tourism and downtown businesses aren’t doing as good as the mayor and VMI want everybody to believe. Now that the mayor had to hold emergency city council meetings to deal with over spending in certain areas and rob Peter to pay Paul maybe people will wake up but probably not. And even worse we now have a vigilante group of untrained”tourist guides” led by angry defeated city council candidate Lisa Ferguson who plan to roam downtown and tell visitors where to go and what to do.  Wonder if she ran her ideas through VMI and told them they weren’t doing their job so she’s taking over? Maybe since she’s best buds with the mayor he’s given his blessing
