Rumor has it the money for this death trail is being paid by the Town of Hanover and Hanover College. 10 million from their Eli Lilly grant. If you wanna complain about things take it up with the town Board for agreeing to pay for a plan that’s almost a decade old. Because this catastrophe in the making first started under Welch and his stellar scheme. Back then it was in fact planned to go from Hanover , across devils back bone and then downtown. It didn’t have a lot of support when Damon proposed it but at least no one tried to pretend a busy highway was a walking path for kids and families. All you have to do is think back to those crazy days when everything was all about being a stellar community. It was a bad idea even when it wasnt a dangerous one.

@ bill due. I think if you do a little research you will find that the 2.6 million you speak of, is only for phase one of the proposed trail expansion. Phase one takes Heritage Trail to Clifty Park. Which I personally don't have any problem with. It's phase two that hasn't been truly discussed in a public forum. Wonder Why?? It's my understanding that phase two is estimated at over 10 million dollars. And by the way, Bob Green is not a decision maker in this process. Hanover Hill becoming a two lane hill is insane!!!!

Hey bill due. If you think Bob hasn’t borrowed this town into serious debt you can’t read the city budget. Money is so tight Bob stole from the airports income. The parks dept was half million plus in the red along with his Pace slush fund for campaign donors and pals was in the red. All reserve cash has been pizzed away on cost override's on the pool and countless other “pretty” projects. As far as money for the trail that measly 28 doesn’t amount to much. The current budget is 10 MILLION and that’s with the city trying to sneak the road repairs by the state. Just so you know that 10 million comes from town of Hanover and Hanover College grant they got from Eli Lilly. So far there’s no plan for cleaning up the mud and rock slides. I’m thinking they just scrape the kids body’s off the rocks and hope the city and Hanover College don’t get sued. No one said anything, anytime about putting Ma and Pa and the kids in the headlights of fast moving traffic. The original route study was Devils Backbone. Hanover College and town board need to keep the 10 million and come up with other projects. This one is dangerously stupid. But you’ll know the truth if they decide not to gather new info and get a safety study. That’ll tell you they already know it’s a bad idea and can’t seem to set it aside until they can solve some of the problems or come up with something better.

What possible benefit to the city of Madison or Hanover could this walking trail be. I understand that the money has been allocated for this this project, but it makes no sense. How is there any return on the money. Are people going to come here to walk the trail and then stop in Hanover at McDonald's and then walk back down to go to the Red Pepper for a sandwich?

The city of Madison has no financial stake in Miss Madison. It does have a stake in the Regatta as it provides services and manpower to the event itself. That may have all changed when Courtney claimed all these assets from the sale by the Miss Madison board belonged to the city. Wow, he gets the best of both worlds. Courtney needs to let the public know where the funds for the new sponsorship are coming from. If they are from private donations then that’s great. If they are from an unknowing city taxbase through city funding then we have entered into a whole new unprecedented realm.

The Heritage Trail expansion is already funded through a 2.6 million dollar Indiana's Next Level Trails program grant. That money has been sitting there waiting for 2 years. The Community foundation paid $28,000 for the route study. Hanover College and Bob Greene is on top of it. Complain to them if you don't like it. LOL City debt? Most of it is sewer and WWT upgrades that is funded by you water and sewage bill rate increases over many year. Somewhere in the 12 million dollar debt range but it is funded.

Can't Madison still host the regatta with out a boat? Alot of tourist dollars come with bringing in big crowds. Madison doesn't have much more then the regatta.

@Conference,

How much money did it cost? Wouldn’t that money be better spent on kids instead of paying other schools? Not being in a conference has nothing to do with the playoffs.

@just asking. No tax payer dollars have paid for anything with MMI.

Get off the notion that the mayor is using City money. Is not happening

Who the heck is paying the bill for Courtney to lease a boat to run in the Regatta as Miss Madison? Is it private donation or is the money coming out of tax payer dollars. I’m so sick of all this spending . The local gop can’t stop spending money. This city’s in so much debt we’ll never get out.
